Hope Thursday, Apr 3 2008

This series of VOAT blogs aim not at those who have had abortions already, but at those who would ever consider it.  If you have had an abortion already, take heart, you do not have to be consumed with guilt!

When Jesus died on the cross, the wrath that was poured out on him was sufficient to cover not only that sin, but every other sin you would ever commit.  If you surrender your life to this Jesus, he becomes your substitute.  You do not have to pay for your sins because he already did!  There is freedom and hope for you whether you have had an abortion or not.

If you are considering having an abortion, if you know someone who is, or you believe it is a morally acceptable behavior that ought to be defended, then these posts are for you.  Know for certain that abortion is wrong; it is murder; and it cannot be justified.

Answering the Critics Thursday, Apr 3 2008

It’s just tissue; not a human

Of course the baby is human.  It comes from two human parents and is a living being.

It’s not a baby; it’s a parasite.

Because it is dependent on another human for life?  So is a two year old!  Would you kill a two year old?

I can’t afford it.

Ask your family for help. Ask a church. Ask an adoption agency.  You don’t kill a person because it is expensive.

It’s my body and my choice!

Your body belongs to God, and so does your baby’s.  Your baby’s life is not your choice.  Make your choice before you make your child.

It’s better to abort it than to give it a miserable life.

With this logic, why not kill all children who are having a miserable life?  If you can’t give it a good life, give it to someone who can.

I was raped. It’s not fair to make me have a baby I don’t want.

It’s not the baby’s fault either.  A murder won’t solve a rape.  Two wrongs don’t make a right.  It might even become a great gift as babies are a gift from God.

Christianity and Abortion Thursday, Apr 3 2008

Why isn’t Christianity compatible with abortion? The first question we need to ask is what is considered a human being? The secular world has redefined the line between when human life begins but Christians believe that life begins at the moment of fertilization.

In Jeremiah 1:5 the Bible, which is the sole source of absolute truth to the Christian, says: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” God is saying that even before we started growing in the womb, we were considered humans to God.

So, why do Christian consider human life so precious? The answer is simple: humans are made in the image of God.

The most specific mention of this is in Genesis 1:27 which says: “ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” We are so important because we are created in God’s image!

The third reason why Christians oppose abortion is that God clearly condemns the murder and sacrifice of children. Leviticus 18:21 says: “You should not give any of your children to offer them to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.”   Molech was an ancient pagan god, and his followers would sacrifice their children to him as an offering. God clearly deemed this as an offence against His holiness and against human beings created in His image.

The fourth reason is that God gave children to us as a gift. Psalm 127:3-4 says: “ Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.” Children aren’t just unimportant objects; each child is precious and will grow up to be just as important as any other human being.

The fifth reason why Christianity and abortion are incompatible is that the human body doesn’t belong to any human, but to God. In the Bible, the body is described in a metaphor as being like a temple. It explains that our body was made as a temple for God to dwell in. Therefore, the human cannot just do whatever he pleases as most people would argue today. In 1 Corinthians 6:19, the Bible says: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.”

It says the same thing in 2 Corinthians 6:16: “ What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”In Romans 12:1-2, Paul says “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good, acceptable, and perfect.” Abortion is not good, acceptable, or perfect, which makes abortion against the will of God. That is why Christianity and abortion cannot be together,  because abortion is against the will of God.

What is Life? Thursday, Apr 3 2008

The famous Dr. Seuss story, Horton Hears a Who!, makes the rather convincing case that “A person is a person, no matter how small.” Horton the elephant finds a small flower that, to his great surprise, cries out for help.  Even more to his surprise, it isn’t the flower that is speaking, but a tiny person he can’t see, who lives in a small village on the flower. The tiny person begs not to be destroyed. Horton promptly commits himself to the person, who is known as Who. Horton risks his very life for the life of Who. Why does he do this? Because he believes the tiny Who has a right  to life. Size is no criteria for life.

There are thousands of unborn “ Who’s” who, even though they can’t  speak, are crying out not to be destroyed. Many abortionists claim that an embryo cannot be alive at conception, it is too tiny microscopic even. But who cares what size it is? Since when have humans been described as five foot beings? Dwarfism is a condition of the bones that keeps humans from growing and developing properly. Adults with dwarfism are usually 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall. They are no less human. Size doesn’t make a difference in a human life.

It is a common argument for abortion that because unborn babies cannot support themselves outside their mother’s womb,  they ought not be called persons. This is not a valid argument.  People on life support cannot take care of themselves. Are we to say that they aren’t humans either? What about people in comas? Or how about people on heart medications or pacemakers? They can’t support themselves all alone either.  The unborn baby simply relies on its mother for its protection. A toddler or small child does the same thing. If a small child falls and scrapes his knee, who’s usually the first person they call on? Their mother. Just because an unborn baby can’t support itself doesn’t mean they aren’t human.

It doesn’t look human. It’s too small. It has a tail. These are also false arguments for abortion. The fetus is small, but people come in all sizes and all stages of development. A two year old and an adult are different, but they are both human. Stage of development does not determine humanness! As for its tail, it is nothing more than the backbone and spine of the fetus. This “tail” never truly disappears. It is still there but as the body grows larger, it fits into place and no longer gives its appearance of a tail. Thus the “tail” is not a tail but  the backbone!

In the words of Ronald Reagan, “Abortion is advocated only by the persons who have themselves been born.” People come from people; however, in the birth of modern technology and current culture, the world has seemed to forget this. Scientists have gotten too far ahead of themselves to appreciate the miracle of human life.
